On July 23 we visited the lower east side ecology center to view their composting site  to learn about composting. Composting is nature's process of recycling decomposed organic materials into a rich soil known as compost. This site takes peoples food waste and turns it into compost.

This truck travels around the neighbor hood to collect peoples food waste.

This first step of composting is a very hot process.

Chole was telling us about how composting works and why she has a thermometer .

On july 22nd we worked with Andy again and painted the bleachers in front of the recreational center . We painted the bleachers because they were not pretty to look at with all the paint coming off , we wanted the bleachers to look presentable.
This is how it looked before. As you can see , it wasn't too pretty .
This is us painting the bleachers . It was cool & messy

This is after we finished painting the bleachers and it looked 10 times better .

On July 16, 2014 the greens teens went on their first trip. This is a trip that we took to Fresh Kills Park that use to be a landfill with all of new york city's trash but is now a great place of clean grass and so many other beautiful sights. Chris Velasco took us around the park. It was amazing to see how they turned something so smelly and messy to something to beneficial to the environment and to the people. We learned lots of things and we walked most of the time but it was definitely worth the exercise. We also learned information about the gas well that they installed at fresh kills. The gas wells collect the gas formed from the trash that is then purified and sold to National Grid.

On July 14, 2014, we continued to work on the previous project which was weeding the flower beds around the recreation center.

This is the end result of what we started a couple of weeks ago. I think we did a great job.

On July 10th 2014, The Green Teens helped Freddy (one of the maintenance workers) with weeding around Alfred E. Smith Recreation center.
This photo represents what the weeds looked like before we started working, as you can see the weeds had not been taken care of for a while, so it looks like and overgrown jungle.

The Green Teens worked tirelessly to remove the weeds that were harming the other plants, and through great effort and hard work they eventually succeeded.
